WHERE TO GO
Corfu, the capital of the Ionian Islands, is full of history. In the Ancient times, it was inhabited by the Phaeacians. The legend tells that Nausicaa, daughter of the king Alkinoos, found Ulysses, wrecked on the beach, chased by Poseidon.
During its history, the island was invaded many times. The most important domination was the Venetian domination. It lasted 400 years and has given the city its magnificent architecture. The city was also occupied by the French republicans in the 18th century and after by the British which restored the Ionian Islands to the Greek kingdom in 1864.
There are several historical buildings in the old town as well as famous squares.
The Spiniada (Esplanade)
Between the city and the Old Fortress, there is a huge open area which, during Venetian rule, was not a square but was used as an open space to fire on besiegers, and to survey their movements. The French decided to plant trees all along the area to give it the shape of a park. The buildings are of various styles like Venetian, French, English and Greek.
The most well-known place in Corfu is the Liston coffee and restaurant passage, situated on the west side of the Esplanade. The archway is the work of a French architect, Lesseps, who also built the almost identical arcades in Paris, at the Rivoli Street.
Town Hall Square
This beautiful square at Eugenios Voulgaris St was the administrative and social center of the city during the Venetian ruling period. The elegant Venetian building was built in 1663 and its construction lasted 30 years. It first was the Lodge of the Nobles Loggia dei Nobili. In 1720, it was converted into a theater under the name of “The San Giacomo Theater”, and played a great role in the reputation of Corfu for its lyrical art. The building functioned as a theater until 1902. Today, it houses the city hall.
The Palace of Saint Michael and Saint George
This palace covers almost the whole northern area of Spiniada and was built following the plans of George Whitemore in 1819-1824 at the initiative of the British Commissioner, Thomas Maitland, for use as the residence of the British commissioners and as an administrative center. It also housed the Ionian Congress and was the headquarters of the Order of St Michael and St George. During the period 1864-1913, the building was also used as a summer residence by the Greek Royal family. It is a majestic building, the only one in Georgian style in the Mediterranean region and was constructed entirely from Maltese stone. Today, the Palace houses the Ionian Congress archives, the Archeological service, 60 000 volumes of the National library, the Museum of Asian art and the Byzantine Collection. The Palace is surrounded by beautiful gardens. In 1837, a bronze statue of Frederick Adam (the Commissioner between 1824 and 1832), was erected in front of the entrance.
Mon Repos has been the summer palace of the Greek Royal family. It was built in 1831 by the British Governor sir Frederick Adam for his wife. In 1864, the king George I bought it and gave it the name Mon Repos. Prince Philippe, duc of Edinburgh, was born there. During World War II, Mon Repos was occupied by the Italians. In 1994, the palace was abandoned. After, the Greek Government has confiscated it and now it is a museum.
Kanoni is located 4 km from the southern part of the town. There, you can enjoy the wonderful view and admire the emblem of the island, Pontikonisi.
Kanoni was named after a battery stationed there by the French Republicans in 1798. A canon, remnant of this tumultuous period, still exists on the small square. The view is very fine, especially when all shades of green and blue are set aglow in the sunset. The islet with the monastery of the Panayia of Vlacherna (17th century) is connected to the land by a narrow bridge. On August 15th, a celebration takes place there.
A little further, there is another verdurous islet, the famous Pondikonisi with the Byzantine church of Saint Panteleymon on it. According to tradition this islet was once the Phaeacian ship that brought Ulysses to Ithaca and which was petrified by the god Poseidon in his wrath.
Saint Spyridon Church
Situated in the center of the old town, this church is dedicated to Saint Spyridon, the protector of Corfu. It is believed that he saved the city from famine, plague and from the Turkish invasion in the 18th century. Four times a year, there is a procession of his holy relics through and around the city walls, on Palm Sunday, on Holy Saturday, also the 11th of august and the first Sunday of November.
The Antivouniotissa Church
This church is one of the oldest in Corfu. It was built in the 15th century. Nowadays, it houses the Byzantine museum where are exposed icons, paintings from the 15th to the 18th centuries as well as works of Cretans artists.
The Old Fortress
The Old Fortress is a masterpiece of fortification architecture. It dominates the east part of the peninsula on which the city is built. The first fortifications were built by the Byzantines in the 8th century and the Venetians extended and strengthened it in the 16th century. The fortress was connected to the city by a bridge which used to be raised every night for security purposes. At the highest point of the fortress is the Stone Tower of the Lighthouse. In the southern part of the fortress is St George’s church, built in the neoclassic style by the British in 1841.
The New Fortress
Construction of the New Fortress by the Venetians began in 1576 after the great siege of 1571 by the Turks, to protect the city, and was completed in 1588. Later on, the British and the French restored the fortification and made some additions. This fortress was connected with the sea and land by four gates. Nowadays, only two gates survive.
The Archeological Museum
The Archeological museum was built between 1962 and 1965. It includes finds from Paleolithic times to the Roman era. The most important piece is the Gorgon pediment from the temple of Artemis (590-580 B.C) from Aghioi Theodoroi, in the Hall of the Gorgon, the most ancient stone pediment of pre-Classical Greek art to have survived. The pediment of Dionysus and a marble torso of Apollo are also exposed there.
Situated 25 km north from the city, Paleokastritsa is the most famous and busy beach of the island. Its beauty is still unequalled, despite all the changes made to improve tourist infrastructure. In fact it was the first place on the island to have experienced tourist development right from the period of British rule, which is why its infrastructure is of high standard.
The place is also famous because it is where archeologists situate the palace of king Alkinoos. According to local legends, the small island of Kalovri would be the other place where Poseidon petrified Ulysses’ ship, but another myth says that Kalovri was an Algerian Pirate ship, petrified thanks to divine intervention.
Paleokastritsa includes six villages next to six bays, called Haghia Triada, Platakia, Alipa, Haghios Spyridon, Haghios Petros and Ambelaki. The beautiful beach offers you many activities as water sport or fishing. You can also try spiny lobsters, the specialty of Paleokastritsa.
Although Paleokastritsa monastery was founded in 1228, the current monastery was built in the 18th-19th centuries. It is an excellent sample of Greek monastery architecture, with its simple-aisled church, internal arcaded courtyard, cells and museum housing interesting portable icons dating from the 15th c. to the 18th c., vestments, holy objects and books.
Just before Paleokastritsa is the small village of Lakones. Just next to the village is Bellavista, where you can enjoy the panoramic view of Paleokastritsa and its bays. It is one of the 10 most beautiful views of Europe.
After Lakones, you find the imposing Aggelokastro, also known as Castle Michel-Angelo, named after its creator, Michel-Angelo II, Sovereign of Epirus. This Byzantine castle of the 13th c. is built on an inaccessible rock 120m high. It was the westernmost outpost of the kingdom of Epirus and played an important role until the end of the 16th century. It was also the headquarters of the island’s governor, elected by the Congress. Many heroic events have taken place there. Inside the castle is the chapel of the Archangels and, close to the north-western wall, St Kyriaki’s church. From here you can see all the way to the town of Corfu: the defenders of the fortress could send signals to the town if any enemy was approaching.
Paxoi is the smallest of the larger Ionian Islands and is situated 7 miles north of Corfu. The 2400 inhabitants live mostly on fishing and olive cultivation.
We don’t know much about the distant past of the island, except that in 229 B.C, a naval battle between Illyrians pirates and Corfiots (during which Corfu was defeated and forced to surrender) took place in the straights between the Paxoi and Antipaxoi islands. Later on, the history of Paxoi is associated with Corfu. In 1814, Paxoi became part of the Ionian Islands and joined them when they united with Greece. The island belongs to the district of Corfu.
With 1300 inhabitants, Gaios is the island’s capital. It was built according to the traditional Eptanesian architecture at the center of the bay, protected buy two tiny islands: Aghios Nikolaos, where only ruins of a Venetian fortress have survived, and Panayia, which has a monastery of the same name where a celebration takes place in August. At Gaios, you can find a historical archive, a library and Aghioi Apostoloi church with important paintings.
North of Gaios, you can visit two lovely fishing villages, Longos and Lakka. Near them lies the beautiful beach of Charami with the cave of Ypapanti, which is connected underground with the Byzantine church of Ypapanti. South of Gaios, there is another village of 250 inhabitants, Ozia, known for its hot water springs. Nearby, at the village of Porto, ruins of two ancient Christian basilicas, Aghia Marina and Aghios Stefanos, remain. In the north-west, we find Trypitos, a natural bridge leading to Moggonisi opposite as well as to several sea caves, among which the most important is Ortholithos with a huge monolith at its entrance.
Antipaxoi is a tiny island situated 3 miles off Paxoi and has only 120 inhabitants. It is a green island with a crystal sea and many sea caves and orchards. Agrapidia, Vatoumi and Vrika are ideals beaches for swimming. You can visit the desert islets of Daskalio and Exolitharo by motorboat. The whole region is ideal for snorkeling and diving.
We wish you a great time in Ionian Park Hotel and Corfu Island !!
